New people, new video identifications
“The video device has represented a privileged medium in contemporary art history to identify the anthropological coordinates of mankind, thanks to its ability in slipping into the spaces of living and shooting both the most ordinary and the hidden identities in our walks of life, thus bringing the “different”, the marginalized, the ‘”other”ones to light.
For over forty years the videocamera has become the bearer of possible visions of the world and its actors by operating from some vantage point directly inside, in contact with or as an emanation of the real: in such a way, it has steadily coped with the problem of attributing identity to people who are actually in constant and unpredictable mobility of roles and designations.
What are therefore the possible characterizations of our and other’s self nowadays, when the traditional biological and social labels seem to have been torn and the physical and cultural traditions of our identity in some way been altered by an incessant technological and social melting pot?
The answer is likely to lie in a delicate balance between the will to bring back our human specificity and the proactive attention to the most plausible suggestions of all new issues that are behind our doors or already in our homes.”
